9:00 AM - 12:00 PMAdath Israel is proud to honour the Ethiopian Jewish holiday of SIGD at a Special Shabbat service.
Sigd (pronounced SEEGd) is a Jewish holiday that has been preserved by Ethiopian Jews. It is celebrated on the 29th of Cheshvan, 50 days after Yom Kippur. In 2008 it became recognized as a national holiday in Israel. Sigd comes from the ancient Ethiopian liturgical language, Ge’ez, meaning “bowing down”. It is also connected to the Hebrew word “sgida” which has the same meaning.
