Special Shabbat in Honour of SIGD

Saturday, 30 November, 2024 29 Cheshvan 5785

9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Adath Israel is proud to honour the Ethiopian Jewish holiday of SIGD at a Special Shabbat service.

Sigd (pronounced  SEEGd) is a Jewish holiday that has been preserved by Ethiopian Jews. It is celebrated on the 29th of Cheshvan, 50 days after Yom Kippur.  In 2008 it became recognized as a national holiday in Israel.  Sigd comes from the ancient Ethiopian liturgical language, Ge’ez, meaning “bowing down”.  It is also connected to the Hebrew word “sgida” which has the same meaning.

Eleni Eyob, an Ethiopian-Canadian will be our guest speaker
